Things I come across that make me wonder, laugh, enjoy, think and experience life in general

We live in a time when our citizens’ acceptance of science balances on a razor thin edge between the Age of the Future and the Dark Ages. Finding people who don’t accept science is nothing new, but we live in an era where our very ability to survive and flourish as a civilization is dependent on science. Not “kinda-sorta dependent” but “everything that we interact with is built on the products of science”. Climate effects, technology, future employment, dealing with population growth … it’s all going to require people to at least trust in and be comfortable with science. That only grows with each passing day, and every day we waste not inspiring and preparing the citizens of tomorrow is a day we step backwards by not moving forward.

The wave of inspiration is swelling, towards discovery, the direction that we humans are meant to move. That direction is forward. It’s built in to our DNA, we are wanderers and explorers, and science gives us the tools to do it best. Curiosity is a truly stunning feat for the human race. We are the only life form that we know of that can actively answer the questions that underly its existence. We are doing it today by launching “boxes with wheels” to other planets. And we will continue to do it tomorrow by feeding off of the inspiration of today.

Joe Hanson, on CNN’s coverage of the Curiosity rover Mars landing  (via crookedindifference)

“The wave of inspiration is swelling, towards discovery.” I told Joe yesterday and I’m telling you now: this is spot on. It gave me goosebumps, because he’s so right. We’re at a precipice and the urgency of it gets more tangible each day. Seeing the excitement and wonder of discovery grab people’s attention, like it did with the Curiosity landing, is so heartening to someone like me. Someone who puts her faith in science and the paths it can open up.

Go read the whole thing. Go. GO.

I second that. Completely.
